U.S. Affirms Support for Armenia's Sovereignty and Electoral Independence
U.S. backs Armenia’s sovereignty and says political future must be decided by Armenians
The U.S. State Department reaffirmed its support for Armenia's sovereignty, territorial integrity, and right to determine its own foreign policy, responding to reports of potential foreign interference ahead of Armenia's June 7 elections.
A State Department spokesperson told RFE/RL's Armenian Service that "the Armenian people have the right to choose their leadership and shape their future," emphasizing that Armenia's political future should be decided solely by its citizens. The statement addressed concerns raised by some American lawmakers regarding external interference in Armenia's electoral processes.
The spokesperson also highlighted deepening U.S.-Armenia relations, noting the significance of the TRIPP framework agreement signed this week by Armenia's Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and the U.S. Secretary of State. The agreement is now ready for ratification and is described as key to bringing peace and prosperity to Armenia and the South Caucasus region.
